Stripers      In part one of this article I addressed some of the administrative changes the Army has made to the promotion system in the last 20 years or so and how they have resulted in a lowered promotion bar for the most part. While this is an important facet of the promotion system I feel that the philosophical changes accompanying them are actually carry more gravitas.      In days gone by the Army Sergeant was the backbone of any un...

(This will be a two parter folks, consider yourself warned)      One of the things about the military that has long troubled me is the subject of promotion. Today’s modern military force was reorganized some 25 years ago along a modified Corporate model. Along with many positive changes in personnel management, pay resolution, and reductions in economic wastes came the Up-or-Out! Promotion system .      Under this system a soldier has certai...

Israelnn.com covers a lot fo stories relating to Israeli and the Middel East "Peace" process... When I cameacross this I was shocked. I always considered Ralph Nader to be a well meaning centrist-to-leftist. I think he is a genuinely decent man. I was therefore shocked to see this quoted from his lips..... Nader said the following: "What has been happening over the years is a predictable routine of foreign visitation from the head of the Israeli governmen...

I had intended to write a bit of a manifesto to a few folks (terrorists) in view of our upcoming workload but due to OPSEC constraints I will simply reprint this in accordance with the author's wishes as it has the same intent even if the delivery method will be different for our unit. My sentiment to the enemy? My unit will find you, we will will fix you, and then... oh then son... this guys unit?.. they will fuck you. This letter is for Abu Musab a...

This is an excerpt of a piece I first read in 1996. It opened my eyes then to a world of posibilities. My wife once asked me what sparked my interest in politics and military science and at the time I didn't know but I think that this piece was the prime mover. Upon giving it solid consideration I realized that what other countries do does in fact matter here at home. That day I ceased to be an isolationist like so many back home in Minnesota who think that we should j...

Today our platoon was heartily engaged in a vital mission of futility. Having recently received a newly minted Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) as our Battalion Commander (BC), we have embarked on a hell-bent-for-leather plot to deceive him. Allow me to elucidate .      Our new BC is by all accounts a hell of a guy and one the best Military Intelligence/Aviation officers of our time. His accomplishments have been stellar, his assignments rewarding, and hi...

The Army and GEN Schoomaker in all their infinite wisdom are very concerned with their soldiers off-duty safety. In keeping with this worthy philosophy they have commisioned a 47 minute DVD for mandatory viewing by all active duty Army personnel. Sounds normal enough....      This DVD is so bizarre that the 12 or so soldiers I watched it with were all completely taken aback. Apparently the Army hired a Mississipi State Trooper to deliver his messag...

In the Army one of the worst feelings is when you or your unit is told to do something that you know the majority of post is just blowing off. Morning PT is a good example. Nearly everyone on Ft. Hood does PT Mon-Wed-Fri... la-dee-da-dee everybody as the saying goes. The problem goes at 0535 as I pull out of my house on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Normalyy on the other days there is a nearly unroken string of traffic creaming by my apartment complex on their way to PT. On th...

Having just returned from the East Coast from a bit of combination leave/TDY I was looking forward to having this weekend (a 3 day due to Corps policy) off to catch up. True to form my buddy SGT Negrodamus called Saturday morning and asked if I would be interested in going fishing? After nailing down all the details like "Where do I get a fishing liscense here?" and "Do you have a fishing rod?" we were off. I got my liscense from the lovely folks over at Wal-mart and...

(No apologies for the delay this time, you will just have to take my word for it that I had other things to do.)      Following my odd bonding session with SSG Calngelo over a hot cup of urine and topped off with a heaping helipn of stress and sleep deprivation , I attempted to throw myself into the yoke as company training NCO. I too over from SGT Moroni who had left the place in a shambles. My office looked as though it had been subject to a Russian treasure search in...

(Note : I will do more of the Charisma series when I get home I promise.)      Last night The Lass and I went out to Ruth's Chris Steak House in Annapolis. Like every other night we had gone out on it was cold and rainy but we soldiered on as it had to be better than the night we went to the Orioles game (shiver)....     I had made our reservations online here (very easy and free) and we drove the KIA down. The Lass was a little apprehensive about letti...
