Just got a new scam that made it through the spam filter. This one looks like a delivery failure notification but it is from an email that you never sent. Wose still is that it has a semi legit link at the bottom to an article at Der Speigel. All the Kenyan email addresses on it suggest something nefarious though...  A Sample...

Oddly the link was to a review of a movie about the death of a Muslim a woman. Not sure what the goal of this spam is really but it is a new one... I wouldn't suggest emailing any of these folks unless of course you want to mes with them...

very likely someone using Outlook...

about 2 years ago I was using outlook as well.... I received an e mail from myself...at a hotmail adress...from my private address... it included an attachment to my bank account and other personal links. It was sent out to everyone in my address book.
I now use Eudora, have a better virus scanner and have not have problems since.
Outlook Sucks!

I got something similar in my gmail account. I learned a long time ago that if I don't know who it's from or what it is, I shouldn't open it....

One way to help avoid this sort of exploitation is to create a dummy user on your system for your emailing. You would log on as the dummy user for any emailing. This user would be email only so if some exploit attempts to mine personal info it wouldn't find any as this user would only have email. All of your personal info would be stored under your regular user.

It won't halt resending malicious emails to everyone in your address book, but at least your sensitive data would be somewhat more protected.

I use Outlook Express and have never had a problem with the program. I use OE simply because it is the only email client that handles Hotmail.

Actually, any email client can handle Hotmail, using something like Web2Pop.

Not true. Oulook uses a special protocol to check Hotmail that can not be reproduced using any other email client.

Bichur - You do know that Incredimail has spyware in it right?
on May 16, 2005
NO! say it ain't so!
What kind? Can I kill them?

Nothing was picked up by Spybot/adaware/MSBeta/or pestpatrol (before they changed)

any diff if free or paid?
on May 16, 2005
I am not sure if they is any difference if your using the free or paid versions. All I know is that it has been brought up many times on this site that Incredimail has spyware in it. Others would know more about this than I.

No kidding? Really? That's funny, I use a small perl script to retrieve my email from hotmail for my linux email client Sylpheed-claws. Seems to work just fine. Fetches the emails and deletes them from the hotmail server. Link

If you don't think Hotmail can be received by any other client than Outlook, please look here:
