The credit for this one goes to my wife :

"Effective 18 May HRC will involuntarily transfer all those soldiers who have not completed their 8 year MSO from the IRR to a reserve unit (or Troop Program Units are what they are being referred as) to bring up the reserve strength to 100%, which equates to 23, 000 soldiers. From 1-14 June HRC will involuntarily transfer all non-volunteers to TPU's and send them where ever they please (and this equates up to 60, 000 soldiers). So, in other words, contact your reserve unit or reserve career counselor and volunteer because if you dont, they are going to send you where you need to be based on the needs of the Army. If you volunteer, at least you get to choose your unit."

For the civilians out there who may be confused.... When you enlist in the Army you actually enlist for 8 years total time. This may be composed of 4 years active duty followed by 4 years in the Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR) or any combination of years that adds up to 8. The time spent on IRR had no requirements beyond being somewhat contactable, you didn't do any weekend drills or anything. IRR was simply a long-term contingency plan sort of affair. Not any more. Now soldiers leaving the Active duty military will have to fulfill the remainder of their 8 year commitemnt in the actual Reserve component witht he one weekend a month and two weeks a years requirement and the possibility of activation for war. I know several people directly affected by this change but it has not received much press.

Good Luck folks.

Ain't the Army grand? I was enjoying life in IRR land, too... Anyhow, I found out about this back on Tuesday, and transferred voluntarily to a training unit Wednesday morning. Then I spent the rest of the week trying to sound the warning of impending doom, and you know, its amazing what you'll hear people say when they're confronted with bad news. The best quote I've gotten is, "If it were true, it'd be on TV." Hahahahahah! Anyhow, some believed some didn't. Best of luck to you all!

Well it is worth stating that it has not hit on perscom or on the Reserve home page. At least not anywhere i could find...

I am so proud of you, Arquonzo *wipes tears away*
You did the right thing. It is going to be interesting though to see how many people dont. I have the message hanging on my retention board in the company for all the soon-to-be-ETSers to see. Oh...the complaints I have received already....sigh....
Its funny though.....for those IRR soldiers who are called up and dont report, boy do they have a few things headed their way. The message even states that they (whoever this "they" is that they speak of, I am not sure) will HUNT them down. It should be fun to watch anyhow.

I think it is a *very* goo idea to call up and knock out the requirements quickly so you can at least be with a local unit like Arq did. The procrastinators will likely end up getting fucked.

Say, any of you kids have a link to this message on the 'net? I haven't successfully found anything related to this since hearing about it... perhaps at least cite the source?
(I don't want to start yelling "Post proof or retract", tho.)

The message has not been posted to the perscom site yet. The local retention folks already have it however.
on May 17, 2004
Yes, I, the local retention (well for my area anyhow) person, have the message in my little hands. And its effective for all purposes today. So, to all those lost IRR people that thought they were golden, good luck : )

I'm still lost in the technical differences between the IRR & the ING. *shaking head*

"Inactive National Guard
(DOD) Army National Guard personnel in an inactive status not in the Selected Reserve who are attached to a specific National Guard unit but do not participate in training activities. Upon mobilization, they will mobilize with their units. In order for these personnel to remain members of the Inactive National Guard, they must muster once a year with their assigned unit. Like the Individual Ready Reserve, all members of the Inactive National Guard have legal, contractual obligations. Members of the Inactive National Guard may not train for retirement credit or pay and are not eligible for promotion. Also called ING. See also Individual Ready Reserve; Selected Reserve. "
My advice for your SO would just be to call up to his unit and ask them. They would be the best route to go with right now as I am sure they had questions too that have already been answered. Or, call up to a NG recruiter. I know it sounds kinda geekish to call them but they do have a lot of good info.

And also, Sergeanto Greywar, you can enlist into the reserves under a different MOS. But I have to talk to you regarding options and stuff anyhow.

There was an article in my paper that the government wanted to use IRS files to track down soldiers that they don't have current addresses on. Of course, privacy rights are being brought up. Is this for everyone or just certain rates?
on May 17, 2004
They are using the IRS to track down soldiers. Also they are using the Transportation Dept too I believe.
on May 17, 2004
Okay, thanks for not taking my demand for proof the wrong way. I'm just honestly curious about this. It seems odd to me that they are willing to track down soldiers who have willingly completed a good protion of their commitment, but they've never done this for SMs who go AWOL.
It also seems odd that you're acting as Greywar's Retention NCO/Career Counselor, but on further reflection, you're the least likely to screw him over. (Over.)
And, as far as joining the reserves in a different MOS, my wife has been looking at that as well. It's just very difficult to picture Greywar as anything but a Pos Monkey (or Pos Monkey Wrangler, anyway).
What's the timeframe for them to sign up before the manhunt begins?
on May 17, 2004
I just want to talk to my SO and try and help him out, I didnt think there was anything wrong with that. I happen to love him....a lot as if it were a big shock (although I am sure he could tell you otherwise. Especially when it comes time to get off the phone. I get extremely belligerent and I dont think he likes it when I do that but he will get over it)
And actually, via the IRS, they have tracked down a few of those AWOL SMs. The IRR is terminated as of tomorrow. Right now they are taking volunteers, but starting next month (June)....its on. For those who are called up involuntarily and do not report to their respective duty stations within 30 days, thats when they start getting ugly.
It is kind of weird picturing Greywar doing something other that sitting on his bum bossing people around and shouting out numbers. Maybe he could come to my side of the house.......be a "Y". Hmmm.......yes.......ironic, no? I realize that I have just opened myself up for a lot of ridiculing remarks, but its ok. BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!
on May 17, 2004
I wouldn't want to shame the entire 98Y field into committing mass suicide. I do have *some* shred of conscience left to me.
