Just drooling over some Xbox 360 specs and such here when I noticed this strange footnote :

*Free Silver membership requires a broadband Internet connection and an Xbox 360 storage device (hard drive or memory unit). Korean players under the age of 14 and players who have previously been banned from Xbox Live are ineligible.

Odd that it is just Koreans under age 14 who are banned. What bizarre incident did I miss here? Chiprj probably knows... If you know, please tell me (and provide links if possible).

Korean players under the age of 14

Oh man, now Pokekorean is banned from playing. Too bad for him.

That is a very weird warning. I wonder what young Korean players under the age of 14 did to piss off Bill Gates. I await the explanation.

I'm betting that Korean law prescribes stiff penalties for serving some types of videogames to minors, and that MS is simply trying to avoid that whole sticky mess by stating in advance that they're not accepting service contracts from Korean minors.

Just like twelve year-olds haven't done anything recently to annoy the Internet, but U.S. law prohibits anybody under 13 from doing certain things, and now all the ecommerce websites and whatnot have these anti-twelve year-old statements and clickthroughs on them.

I think you may be on to something stute... I do recall South Korea passing a bunch of laws recently designed to lower the amount of game time spent by their youth (it has become something of a problem over there).

As someone who once spent time in a internet cafe surrounded by a squawking milieu of young Koreans i'd suggest XBox Live is not without a kindred spirit.... or two.

Hey dude I can tell you Korea has stricter child protection laws and your not allowed to collect info on children under 14 (similar to the US COPPA Act Children's online privacy & protection act). So there you go, thats why MS can't collect info on Koreans under 14.

Thanks!

Yep, it's the Law kiddies! South Korea and China in fact have recently been putting up many laws around video games to try and protect their people and youth. It's also illegal to be playing online for (iirc) more than 2 hours at a time. But you have to understand, there is more than once documented case of individuals there actually dying because they dropper literally everything in their lives and played WoW or whatnot until they died of malnutrition etc. We think we are crazy about our games here, those folks are frack'n insane. Nuff said.

Asia is more technoglic than the US (in terms of Civilian High-tech stuff). one thing to note Is that Europe and japan (and even china in some parts) Have A efficent Mass transit system AND in eurpoe it unites The EU members ETC. BUT The US? it has amtrack and a few others but no really good trainsit systems FORCING PEOPLE TO USE CARS (isn't that a tad bit strange?) about a pond over Europe Equally has REALLY high gas exicse tax SO it forces people to use Thier Mass trainsit systems ETC. so me thinks The US is missin out....It has the Most advanced and 2nd biggest Military (In terms of soilders employeed) Compared to the Chinese Military which has more soilders employeed but most of this is true and if you look hard enough you will find evidence... anyways American companies should STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM ASIA unless they want really cheap labor or because they work so damn hard who knows RANT OVER!

Guys, this directly related to the 2 or 3 kids that dropped dead at internet cafe's.
Korea passed a couple of laws after that

There is the Korean that died playing X-Box, it happened this past summer. Some young Korean played for several days straight and died of heart failure. I read that on the AP Newswire...he quit his job and played at one of those cafes. Never stopped. Must've gotten his blood pressure elevated for such a long time, he actually killed himself. Or perhaps he had an embolism from sitting in the same position for too long, and the blood clot ran up to his lungs or heart and killed him.

Judging by the other commetns, it's because of laws protecting Korean minors. I thought maybe Xbox is having a feud with tthe Korean Youth Mafia.

I wouldn't take the "gaming killed him thing too seriously, Koreans also beleive that sleeping in a room with a running fan will kill you, that you can have "air conditioner diease" (not Legionaire's), and that dreams about pigs and blood is good luck:)
