John Stewart recently appeared on CNN’s Crossfire and what followed was 13 and a half minutes of brutal TV. John took them to task for being one of the most polarizing influences on TV and he was right.

Now I suppose that as a member of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy I should feel sympathy for Carlson Tucker (the shows conservative asshat) who received the brunt of Stewart’s verbal sodomy but I don’t. Tucker came off as a complete retard. His only defenses were to try and say that Stewart’s own Daily Show (on Comedy Central) didn’t do hard-hitting interviews. (If you can’t figure out why that is an absurd defensive tact you need to have your head examined)

Ifilim has it hosted here but be patient as it is currently the top short film they are showing so they are taking a massive pounding.

Money quote? Stewart to Tucker :

“You’re just as big of a dick in person as you are on your show!”

I only saw the aftermath re-hashing on other channels. They did get slapped around pretty good though. Hahahaha!
I don't like john Stewart either but hey, it's his personal clown cock, so he can do with it what he wishes.

Stewart is the poster child of the modern liberal. Smug and intolerant of other points of view. When I saw him call Tucker a "dick" I was thinking "Pot calling kettle..."

"Pot calling kettle..."

The difference here is that Stewart is not a journalist. He is a comedian. I want my comedians to be dicks:)

I don't share his liberal views but he had many great points about the nature of the "political discourse" on crossfire. Especially the part where Crossfire claimed it was a "debate" show.

I enjoyed it, but not as much as I would have thought from the hype. Maybe I suffered from hype-poisoning...

Perhaps, I enjoyed the hell out of it:)

I think it's a bit ridiculous to imply that all liberals are smug and intolerant of other people's points of view without pointing out that there are just as many smug and intolerant people on the right. There are just as many, if not more, right-wing talk show hosts, talk radio hosts, and hard-right Republicans spewing their smugness and intolerance all over the airwaves every day of the week. I think it is fairer to say that Stewart, unlike Rush Limbaugh...is a comedian who often takes jabs at both sides...but goes after the right more often because they happen to be the party in power. Limbaugh, while not a comedian, could be characterized as a "clown" with a microphone who EXCLUSIVELY spews intollerance and smugness towards Democrats and their points of view. If Stewart is a poster child of anything, he is the poster child of the modern political satirist...not liberals or the Democratic party.

You know, I saw the title of this article on the "Recent JoeUser Articles" and I thought to myself, that sounds like something Greywar would come up with.

I'm with T_Bone here - Stewart's a brilliant comedian, I don't care who he skewers. Carlson was silly not to play along with the joke.

Cheers,

I have to ask - do any of you actually WATCH Crossfire regularly or did you just watch the one clip?

Anyone who actually...you know...watches Crossfire would understand why it's absurd that Stewart would focus on Tucker.  Begalla is not just left wing (which is fine on a debate show) but he's a professional spin doctor. That's what he does. That's what he's traditionally been paid to do.  He's currently working for John Kerry as a spin doctor. So for Stewart to ride Carlson was the height of Hypocrisy.

I like The Daily Show. But I don't like left-wing smugness. That sort of acid "I'm going to lampoon my conservative opponents to demonstrate just how witty and superior I am." Begalla, in many ways, is very similar to Stewart. He loves that biting acid smugness that has the dual effect of minimizing his political opponents while making him seem smart and superior.

Frankly, the left's hatred of Bush I just find plain creepy. I never understood why the right wing kooks hated Clinton so much and I don't understand why the left is so freaked out by Bush. Bunch of god damn freaks on both sides.

I didn't see it like that. How many times did Stewart tell the two of them "what you do is theater, not debate. What you do is not honest. What you do is partisan hackery."

He didnt try to hold punches to eather one of them. The was going off on both of them. Begalla finally shut the fuck up and took it. Carlson was the one that tried to go after him, and only succeeded in making himself look more like a fuckstick.

"for Stewart to ride Carlson was the height of Hypocrisy" Did it ever occur to you that maybe Tucker Carlson was the only one who accepted an invitation to be on the show and therefore he took the brunt of the jokes? No, of course not...it's that dreaded media conspiracy at work again.

"But I don't like left-wing smugness. That sort of acid "I'm going to lampoon my conservative opponents to demonstrate just how witty and superior I am."

As I have said before, there is a lot of right-wing smugness to go around as well and they are pretty good at lampooing liberal opponents to demonstrate just how witty and superior THEY are. What exactly is your complaint here...that the left can be just as witty and smug as the right? Talk about the "height of hypocrisy..."

Therein lies the Heart of the matter Brad. Not Stewart's smugness. He made an excellent point about their show and Carslon refused to admit that the point might have any merit. He instead decided that he wanted the slugfest and then he came out looking like a tool. You should know where most of my politics lie by know Brad but the reason I didn't take up on Carlson's side versus Begall (not that I took his side anywhere if you will notice) was that he opened his mouth and proved himself to be unworthy of the challenge.

Crossfire is not a debate show, it is just 2 sides blazing away without pause. Meme follows meme from both sides while the producers prod each for greater volume. High theatre as Stewart said. Not a debate.
