NPR - Fair and Balanced?
Published on August 2, 2004 By greywar In Current Events

This morning on the way home from PT I heard something that highlighted the sort of leftist nonsense that crosses the border from harmless asshattery into the realm of endangering the public.

Former CIA/State Department Counter-terrorism wonk Larry C. Johnson held forth on NPR saying that the release of the recent specific terror threats against NYC was “irresponsible” “grandstanding” and “crying-wolf”. To back this position he said that just because we have recently discovered documents from a  target study of NYC in which Al-Qaeda cells outlined their thoughts on using VBIED’s (Vehicle Based Improvised Explosive Devices) against large buildings and population centers doesn’t mean that we should react to them. I quote , “Just because someone thinks about doing something doesn’t mean they will do it. I mean I think about winning the lottery all the time but I don’t actually do it.” Yes, this is what passes for reasoning of the loon left. I think Al-Qaeda has proven itself capable of acting on it’s impulses don’t you Mr. Johnson? By way of jogging your memory perhaps a bit of time spent here will help.

When you get done penning missives to all those families apologizing for your failure to stop 9-11 come back and talk to about your fucking lottery fantasy.

Mr. Johnson and other excerable pukes like him are the reason that no President (not even President Clinton) should be blamed for 9-11. These are folks who point to a lack of a successful terror attack and say that we have too much security. If we had stopped the 9-11 hijackers before they did the deed Mr. Johnson and NPR would be leading the charge against the government crying “racial profiling” (all were Arabs after all) or  “Too much security! This is just like 1984!” or “They were not carrying any bombs!” or “Just box-cutters? Does Bush want to start rounding up all the people in the moving industry too?”.

Mr. Johnson also went on to say that threats are “information warfare” put out by terrorists to see how the government will react. While it is absolutely true that many terror threats are red herrings it is disingenuous to say that it is wrong react to them. What is your solution Mr. Johnson? Oh you have none? Then how about shutting your pie-hole and letting the people actually fighting the terrorists do their jobs? When you can tell Tom Ridge how to tell a real threat from a fake one with 100% accuracy I am sure we will all be grateful.

P.S. NPR followed up this bit of “news” with a piece deploring the Dept. of Homeland Security’s collection of census data on Arabs living in the U.S. to use in an investigation of Terror group financing. Arab groups were quoted as being “disappointed” that they would be targeted this way. (Who the fuck else is funneling money to terror? It sure ain’t the Urban League!)

Yeah I am disappointed too. Disappointed that you seem to be the only ethnic group in the world strapping explosives to kids, bombing school buses, flying planes into trade centers, and blowing up car bombs as fast as you can build them. I guess we will both have to live with our “little disappointments’ huh?

The problems of how much credence to lend certain red flags and how strongly to react to terrorist threats are not lightly dealt with. The theory that any strong reaction to the possibility of a terrorist attack meaning the terrorists have already won is weak. Going about our daily lives with no regard to the personal safety of ourselves and fellow Americans is irresponsible and foolish. Yet giving into a police state mentality is heavily undesirable as well. However, I see no police state here.

Re: PS. There was only one person in our platoon that had wound up giving money to an Islamic extremist terrorist group front during the Combined Federal Campaign. She wasn't Arab, but she was an Islamic-ish Persian American. (I know you're lumping them in even though they don't themselves.)

just outta idle curiosity, how did you manage to identify larry johnson's political orientation.  based on the info in on his site, it appears he was employed by the whitehouse during the bush administration and the cia while reagan was president.

all of which would lead me to believe (since he clearly seems to be a loon) he actually may be a card-carrying rightwing republican loon

I'm thinking, kingbee, that greywar has an encyclopaedic knowledge of political figures, and he knew Johnson's "orientation" before he opened his mouth. Doing a quick Google shows that he seems to lean left, at least.

Bravo! Thank God, that you and those who bear so much responsibility for our safety, are on the alert for the real dangers from fanatics on the loose. Good work! Glad to see your blog site is alive again. It has been rather too quiet.

I would hate to see the crocodile tears from the left wing politicians if any of their constituents were killed in a terror attack and there was NO
increase in the terror alert level. The recriminations would be worse than the 9/11 commitee is now with every politcal shitbag trying to ensure that their POV
gets coverage no matter how unfounded. Americans love to play the blame game and politicians play with the best of them so they can say "It wasn't my fault!"
