Just don't ask me for a link!

60% of Americans say ham is evil! So why does this administration continue to support the use of ham in schools!

Sound outrageous? Of course it does. It is an outrageous claim. If I actually expected you to believe this it would be reasonable to ask me for a link to the source of my claim. If you asked for proof of it and I couldn't provide it you would be justified in assuming that I was full of shit.

This same principle applies to generalized statements in blogs. If you say that "most of America does/doesn't support X" then you need to be prepared to back it up. Getting huffy when someone asks for proof is usually the first sign that someone doesn't have any proof or that they inferred something from a source that doesn't actually say what they implied it did.

By the same token when supplying "proof" to a questioner it doesn't help you to provide a link to a source that is obviously partisan or from the loony bin. An example of non-proof would be "proving" the existance of space liens on the Moon by linking to a source like Enterprisemission.com. This sort of link proves exactly nothing. If you want to "prove" a public opinion on an issue you need accepted sources like Gallup, CNN, FOX, ABC, USA Today's polls (done by scientific method) and not the polls on Bill O'Reilly.com. Bill's polls are interesting but not accurate (as he tells you up front).

Asking for proof of claims isn't "lawyering" it is the standard by which your postings are judged. Screw this up often enough and no one will read your posts anymore.

When you take a lot of science and math, proofs become second nature. If I see no proof, then there is no valid argument....'nough said.

"you need accepted sources like Gallup, CNN, FOX, ABC, USA Today's "

and how many times these kinds of proofs were declared "Biased". "MSM Propaganda",.... etc.

I am sure you know that kind of thing happen all the time. I usually take the opinion and answer it one way or another. leaving the main issue and start debating "proofs" and "credibility" doesn't really help in anyway. We are supposed to assume honesty, and if i believe something that you think is wrong, then it will be a great help if you show me why it is wrong.

I am sure that you know that Polls could be misleading too, and references that i think are credible you may think are none sense. it is all opinions, i really think the best way is to answer them not argue about references and proofs. If i oppose an idea you think i will change my idea because the idea was supported by many sources? it is much easier to convince me to change my mind if you just answer my opinion in a logical and consistent way.

That is my opinion any way, don't you agree?

Polls aren't proof of a damn thing regardless of the source. They only prove what 1,000 people answered (truthfully or otherwise)

Well, I've always thought that ham was evil.

then no proof is required because you're speaking your OWN opinion, and no one else's.

And therein lies the problem... Oftentimes blog assume their opinion is everyone elses and then state it as "fact".
