Melee back in development
Published on April 12, 2004 By greywar In Misc Games
Some of the old BBS hands out there may remember the door game melee. For years it was one of the most in-depth gladiator simulations ever made. In fact it still stands as a monument to games that favor depth and complexity over flash and fanfare.
This being said I want to let anyone who stumbles on this know that the original developer Banzai software (with whom I am in no way affiliated) has resumed work on a newer version. The developer (and some of us gamers) would appreciate anyone who enjoyed he game in the old days to test out his newest version for free. The only BBS running an authorized version of Melee is currently located at :
telnet://biohazmat.ath.cx port 23

The game can be found under the online experimentation menu in option 8 game 20. We look forward to spilling your blood:) Khaine awaits!

If any one might be scared off due to the time invested by the "regulars" of the BBS, there will be a "tournament" MELEE game starting soon. This should be on a separate MELEE program on the same BBS, so everyone can start on the same footing. Just make sure you (C)omment on the appropriate News item when logging in.

Say, Grey, is there any word back from the developer on the newest versions? I'd really like to see what he has done for an update...

I have not heard a thing back from the dev or from Biohazard yet.

The last official release of Melee was 3.59.4 released circa May 1999.

It was released by myself and the current "Melee Online" to do list is exactly my listing. I have not done anything with it for various reasons but I am still around. All rights were transferred by Kevin Higgins to myself in 1993, ergo, Banzai software no longer has any claim on the modern versions.

Is Melee still being developed? No. It will be resumed at some point in the future if for no other reason than "it can be".

Is it still supported? Yes. v3.59.4 Alpha is a rough port and not supported. 3.52 is available through regular BBSNET channels.

What's up with it? Well, I suppose nothing because of 10 million things. But I never gave up my rights to the software, so everything else is unofficial. Since I've yet to find a copy of 4.0 or 5.0 or "Melee Online" I cannot comment further.

Thank you.
BTW the main reason it is no longer supported is due to lack of user participation. I am happy to re-open discussions and anticipate it being reborn as a McMaster University project to educate up and coming programmers. Email me with your ideas. They might happen.
